The Great Volunteer Army

There once was a mighty army,
Whose ranks were filled by many
In honest service or for repute,
One day it fell to dispute.

An indignant pawn took to words,
Penning an allegory afterwards,
Decrying army superiors
Who kept them safe from aggressors.

See, some of the troops reflected
A society where people acted
As though duty was an afterthought;
The smallest of steps were challenged and fought.

The militia grew weak and indulgent
As files of soldiers turned truant.
So the army did nothing at all
And slid to its inexorable downfall.

Penned by my hand on the 17th of Miraman, in the year 734 AF.
